Planter Fasciitis
Understanding Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel and the bottom of the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue connecting your heel bone to your toes, becomes inflamed or irritated. This condition can affect anyone but is particularly prevalent among runners, people who are overweight, and those who wear shoes with inadequate support.
Causes of Plantar Fasciitis
- Overuse: Repetitive activities that put stress on the plantar fascia, such as running or standing for long periods, can lead to inflammation.
- Foot Structure: People with flat feet, high arches, or abnormal walking patterns may be more prone to developing plantar fasciitis. These structural issues can place extra strain on the plantar fascia.
- Improper Footwear: Wearing shoes that do not provide adequate arch support or cushioning can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. High heels, worn-out shoes, or non-supportive footwear can exacerbate the condition.
- Age: Plantar fasciitis is more common in people aged 40-60. As we age, the plantar fascia can become less flexible and more prone to injury.
- Weight: Excess body weight increases the strain on your plantar fascia, which can lead to inflammation and pain.
Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis
- Sharp pain in the heel or along the arch of the foot, especially with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest.
- Pain that worsens after prolonged standing or activity.
- Tenderness and swelling in the heel area.
Treatment and Prevention
- Rest and Ice: Reducing activity and applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain.
- Stretching Exercises: Stretching the calf muscles and the plantar fascia can improve flexibility and alleviate symptoms.
- Supportive Footwear: Wearing shoes with good arch support and cushioned soles can prevent further strain on the plantar fascia.
- Orthotics: Custom orthotic inserts can provide additional support and help distribute pressure more evenly across the foot.
- Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can design a specific exercise programme to strengthen the muscles and improve foot mechanics.
- Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT): This non-invasive treatment involves delivering shock waves to the affected area to promote healing and reduce pain.
- MLS Laser Therapy: A cutting-edge treatment that uses multi-wave locked system (MLS) laser technology to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair.
Biomechanics Appointments and Pressure Plate Technology
At our podiatry practice, we offer specialised biomechanics appointments to thoroughly analyse the forces going through your feet. Using advanced pressure plate technology, we can measure the distribution of pressure across your feet and identify any abnormalities in your gait or posture. This detailed analysis allows us to create a tailored treatment plan that addresses the root cause of your plantar fasciitis.
Custom Phits Orthotics
Based on the data gathered from your biomechanics appointment, we can design custom Phits orthotics to provide optimal support and correction for your feet. These high-quality orthotic inserts are 3D-printed to match your unique foot structure, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness in relieving plantar fasciitis symptoms.
